Medical Alert: Avandia
Diabetes drug Avandia raises risk of heart attack, a new study suggests.A new study by Dr. Steven Nissen, a Cleveland Clinic cardiologist, published in The New England Journal of Medicine suggests that patients taking Avandia (Rosiglitazone) are exposed to an increased risk of heart attack and other serious cardiovascular problems. Avandia is a widely prescribed diabetes drug, used to treat Type 2 diabetes and has been linked to liver and cardiovascular issues in the past. It is reported that the study found an increased 43% risk of heart attack amongst those patients using Avandia.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety alert shortly after the Nissen findings were made public. It urged diabetics taking the drug to talk to their doctors. The FDA acknowledged that the manufacturer of Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline PLC of London, submitted information in August 2006, indicating an increased risk of heart failure from the drug.
We are investigating legal claims in Canada against the manufacturers of the drug.
