Ford Spark Plug Blow Outs
We are investigating numerous reports of spark plug blow outs from certain Ford vehicles. The vehicles in question are Ford cars and trucks built between 1997 and 2005, which are equipped with Ford Triton 4.6L and 5.4L V8 and V10 engines. These vehicles include the Econoline vans, F-series trucks, the Explorer, Expedition, Excursion, Crown Victoria and Mustang, amongst others.
The common complaint is a blow out of spark plugs from the aluminum cylinder-head as a result of a suspected engineering defect: the aluminum head allows the threads to be easily stripped and has a lack of thread depth to sufficiently hold the plugs in the head.
Blow-outs usually occur after the expiration of the original factory warranties, but before reaching 160,000 kilometres when it is recommended that the spark plugs be replaced. As a result of the spark plug blow out, the cylinder-head usually has to be replaced at a significant cost.
If you meet the following criteria:
- you own or lease a Ford vehicle with one of the above listed engines, which vehicle you have owned or leased since new, and
- you have experienced a spark plug blow out before 160,000 kilometres
